Having clean ears is a basic requirement to ensure the health of our pets’ ear apparatus.

Dirty, smelly ears are not only unpleasant to see, but excess earwax can be a predisposing factor for otitis in dogs and cats : an inflammatory process in the ear that can cause itching and pain, and may be accompanied by microbial, bacterial and/or Malassezia infections.

Therefore, the hygiene and cleaning of ears must be performed regularly, correctly and thoroughly, using a product specifically developed for veterinary use.

Several products are available on the market, including Cerulen.

WHAT IS CERULEN?

Cerulen is an ear solution to clean the ears of dogs and cats, with cerumenolytic, sanitising and soothing properties.

It removes excess earwax from dogs’ and cats’ ears and promotes the hygiene and physiological well-being of the ear canal.

WHAT DOES CERULEN CONTAIN?

Cerulen contains Perhydrosqualene (better known as squalane), Isopropyl myristate, Tea Tree oil, Calendula extract, Helichrysum extract, Bisabolol, Benzyl alcohol, Soybean oil.

It does not contain parabens, colourings, lauryl sulphates (SLS and SLES).

squalano - Teknofarma

Perhydrosqualene (squalane) and Isopropyl myristate

Perhydrosqualene and isopropyl myristate have mainly a cerumenolytic action and are both well tolerated by the delicate epithelium of the ear canal of dogs and cats.

In addition, Perhydrosqualene has a peculiar emollient and skin protective function: it forms a sort of protective film on the skin, creating a protective barrier against harmful external agents.

tea tree oil - Teknofarma

Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Australian plant Melaleuca alternifolia (also known as “tea tree”).

It is a 100% natural, plant-derived product, consisting mainly of a mixture of terpenes. The most important one is terpinen-4-ol, which is also the main contributor to the biological effects of Tea Tree oil.

Tea Tree oil:

  • helps fight microbial infections (bacterial and Malassezia pachydermatis)
  • has naturally anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties
  • helps keep pests (e.g., flies) away
  • has anti-odour properties.
calendula officinalis - Teknofarma

Calendula extract

Calendula extract is obtained by extraction from the flowers of Calendula officinalis.

It contains mainly carotenoids, flavonoids and triterpenes and has strong soothing and skin repairing properties.

elicriso - Teknofarma

Helichrysum extract

Helichrysum extract is obtained by extraction from the flowers of Helichrysum italicum.

It contains mainly carotenoids, flavonoids and triterpenes and has naturally anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

It also helps fight microbial infections, particularly bacterial ones.

bisabololo - Teknofarma

Bisabolol

Bisabolol is the main component of Chamomile essential oil.

It has strong soothing, naturally anti-inflammatory, emollient and decongestant properties.

It is well tolerated even by individuals with the most sensitive skin.

Bisabolol also acts in combination with Tea Tree oil to help fight microbial infections.

WHEN SHOULD I USE CERULEN?

Thanks to its specific composition, Cerulen has a triple action:

  • cerumenolytic, thanks to Perhydrosqualene and Isopropyl myristate
  • sanitising and anti-odour, thanks to Tea Tree oil, which helps create an environment unfavourable to the proliferation of bacteria and yeasts (Malassezia pachydermatis) and the attack of pests (flies, mosquitoes, etc.)
  • soothing and repairing, thanks to Bisabolol and Calendula and Helichrysum natural extracts.

Thus, Cerulen:

  • can be used for the normal cleaning of the ears of dogs and cats and before the application of topical ear medications
  • can help reduce the incidence of ear conditions in predisposed dogs and cats (e.g., dogs with pendulous ears, animals with excess hair at the entrance to the ear canal, or with ear canal stenosis)
  • can be used as an adjunct to the treatment of diseases of the outer ear in dogs and cats, characterised by itching, rash, alterations in the bacterial and fungal flora, associated with excess production of earwax and bad odour and at risk of attack by insect pests (such as flies).

HOW SHOULD I USE CERULEN?

What does the package contain?

The package contains:

  • a 50 ml bottle
  • an adaptor cap
  • a graduated syringe.

The supplied devices, adaptor and graduated syringe:

  • ensure convenient and fast delivery of the solution into the ear canal
  • prevent spillage of the product when it is taken from the bottle
  • ensure a high standard of hygiene because they reduce the risk of possible contamination of the solution from direct contact with external agents.

How should I use the adaptor and graduated syringe?

  1. When using Cerulen for the first time, open the bottle and insert the adaptor fully into the bottle neck. Once in place, the adaptor must not be removed.
  2. Hold the bottle upright and insert the syringe into the adaptor slot. Make sure that the plunger is fully inserted into the syringe.
  3. Turn the bottle upside down with the syringe inserted into it and slowly pull the plunger, drawing the solution until the desired notch on the scale is reached. If you draw too much solution, return the bottle to the upright position and slowly discharge the excess quantity into the bottle.
  4. Turn the bottle back the right way up and extract the syringe from the adaptor by rotating it. Discharge its contents into your pet’s ear.
  5. If the syringe becomes dirty during administration, clean it with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol.

Cleaning the ears of dogs and cats: quantity and mode of use of Cerulen

Gently place the right amount solution into the ear canal of each ear with the dosing syringe:

  • 1 notch (0.125 ml) for cats
  • 3 notches (0.375 ml) for small dogs
  • 5-8 notches (0.625 – 1 ml) for medium and large dogs.

Massage the base of the ear upwards to help the debris out.

For best results, leave the product on for at least 15 minutes.

Remove the earwax and debris with gauze or a hygienic wipe.

The shaking the animal’s head helps the removal of debris from the deeper part of the external ear canal.

At the end of the procedure, a thin oily film is left on the inner surface of the auricle. This is not an undesirable effect of the product, but rather helps provide a protective barrier for the ear canal against harmful external agents.

If Cerulen is used to clean the ear canal in preparation for the use of topical ear medications, postpone the application of the medication by a few hours.

In case of animals with ear diseases or perforation of the eardrum, always consult your veterinarian in advance.

IN WHICH SIZES IS CERULEN AVAILABLE?
