The role of unsaturated fatty acids in inflammatory processes

Many disorders in dogs and cats, particularly chronic inflammatory disorders (such as atopic dermatitis, osteoarthritis, IBD), can be prevented and modulated in several ways, including by correcting the diet and supplementing it with missing or lacking elements, whose effectiveness in contrasting these disorders has been scientifically proven.

Unsaturated fatty acids have multiple functions; the most studied one is related to their role in inflammatory processes.

Some Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are precursors of eicosanoids, an important group of molecules that increase or decrease the immune response during inflammatory processes.

Specifically, Omega 6 fatty acids are the precursors of mediators (thromboxanes, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes) with a predominantly “proinflammatory” action, while Omega 3 fatty acids have an “anti-inflammatory” action.

Essential fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly those in the Omega 3 series (especially EPA and DHA), are of critical importance in the dietary prevention of chronic inflammatory disorders in dogs and cats.

In particular, the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 (Omega 6 : Omega 3) fatty acids in the diet is especially important.

What is Linsen?

Linsen is a complementary feed for dogs and cats, high in Omega 3 ad Omega 6 fatty acids. It is mainly indicated as nutritional support in case of chronic inflammatory disorders thanks to its high content in Omega 3 fatty acids.

What does Linsen contain?

Linsen contains flaxseed oil, fish oil, borage oil, linoleic acid conjugates (CLA) and soybean oil.

Thanks to this composition, it has a high concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids (α-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) and Omega 6 fatty acids (linoleic acid, conjugated linoleic acids (CLA), γ-linolenic acid).

Most importantly, the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids is such that it shifts the Omega 6 : Omega 3 ratio in the diet toward values that are considered suitable for preventing and modulating chronic inflammatory disorders in dogs and cats.

The optimal concentration of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) in Linsen reduces the mediators of inflammation.

The composition of Linsen includes Zinc, Biotin, and Vitamin B6: important cofactors that are essential for the metabolism of fatty acids in the body.

Linsen also contains vitamins A, E, and C, which, together with Zinc, protect the epithelial tissue and have antioxidant properties, so they are essential for protecting cells from the damaging action of free radicals.

When is Linsen indicated?

Linsen is indicated to correct the diet of dogs and cats in chronic inflammatory conditions such as:

  • atopic dermatitis and inflammatory processes of various kinds affecting the skin
  • osteoarthritis and joint disorders
  • cardiovascular disorders (e.g., atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease)
  • kidney failure
  • asthma
  • allergies.

In these cases, a high intake of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids can help contain the inflammatory phenomenon.

How should I use Linsen?

In chronic inflammatory disorders in dogs and cats, the benefits of Linsen are related to the time it takes to rebalance the ratio of Omega 6 : Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet.

Therefore, the treatment must be continued for at least one month.

Linsen can be administered continuously or in cycles, according to the indications of your Veterinarian.

Shake vigorously before use, so that the sediment can be completely dispersed.

Administer the daily amount divided into meals, mixing it with the usual food.

Recommended daily intake:

  • dogs: initially 5 ml per 10 kg bodyweight for 15 days, then 2.5 ml per 10 kg bodyweight every day
  • cats: initially 0.5 ml per kg bodyweight for 15 days, then 0.25 ml per kg bodyweight every day

In order to avoid the onset of loose stools, gradually reach the full daily intake over 3-4 days. In case of loose stools, reduce the daily dosage.

It is recommended that a veterinarian’s opinion be sought before use.

In which sizes is Linsen available?

Linsen is available in two packages:

  • 120 ml bottle
  • 200 ml bottle.

Both packages include a graduated syringe to facilitate dosing.

Where can I buy Linsen?
Linsen is a complementary feed and can be purchased in pharmacies, drugstores, pet shops and online on specialised pet product websites.
